Lalita, Vishaka, Champaklata, Chitra, Tungavidhya, Induleka, Rangadevi, and Sudevi ~ all of these eight prominent gopis, called Astasakhi, are regarded to be an expansion of Radha herself. They’re as entrenched into the love story of RadhaKrishna as the spring, the monsoons, the peacocks, the flute, and the forests of Braj.
They serve the divine couple, take part in the rasleelas, console Radha when she’s distraught in Krishna’s separation and orchestrate secret meetings for them. They’re so dear to Krishna, that it is believed that Krishna took them to Golok with him, a heavenly realm where the divine couple went after their duties were completed on the earthly realm. It is believed that all of them reside there, still, engaging in the joys of rasleelas with the divine couple.
