Fire of Desires
Almost everything in the world has its limits, but the fire of desires and anger is unquenchable. He has an insatiable appetite that has no end. Whatever fuel you add to the fire, be it wood, oil, whatever it is, it will never be enough. The word alam means “satisfaction” and analam means “lack of satisfaction.” The fire of desires and anger, that is, analam, can never be satisfied. If this is its nature, is there any way to control it?
The Lord states in the Gita:
“Anger can be overcome by Love, and desires by renunciation and sacrifice.”
Where Love reigns, there can be no anger. If you develop Love within yourself, then there will be no place left in your heart where hatred and anger can take root. The heart is like a chair: only one quality can occupy its place. There will be no room for two qualities at the same time. A devotee should make every effort to establish Love in his heart.
If you want to overcome anger with Love, then you must develop Love and only Love in your heart. Love is always ready to flow freely, without noticing the shortcomings and weaknesses of others. Love has this outstanding quality: it lives by giving and forgiving, while the little ego lives by taking and forgetting. Where there is Love, there can be no place for selfishness, and where there is selfishness, there will be no Love.
