Shikha Pandey’s dream of playing cricket began in her childhood. She was even selected to represent India at 15.
During her school years, Shikha displayed her academic excellence by securing a high rank in the board exams. This success motivated her to prioritize her studies and temporarily set aside her cricket aspirations for three years.
Studies have been the top priority for this young star. However, she always dreamt of playing cricket for the country. So, she had to juggle a lot between academics & her cricket training during her college days.
Shikha is trained under Nitin Vernekar, former Goa cricketer and Sports Authority of Goa coach. And to reach for her training sessions, Shikha had to cover a 12km journey every day. This period was very important for the growth of Shikha as a cricketer. However, Shikha did not let her passion for cricket affect her studies, and she excelled in both studies as well as sports.
After graduating in 2010, Shikha had lucrative job offers from three multinational companies, but she turned them down to take a year off and focus on her cricketing career. In 2011, she joined the Indian Air Force and became an air traffic controller in 2012.
Finally, in 2014, after years of perseverance, dedication, & balancing multiple professions, Shikha achieved her dream of playing cricket at the international level. She made her debut in T20 cricket against Bangladesh, followed by her debut in ODI and Test cricket against England.
Today, Shikha Pandey is one of the finest players in the Women’s Cricket & is also a retired Squadron Leader in the Indian Air Force.
Her ability to excel in both academics and different professions while pursuing her passion for cricket serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes who face similar challenges in their pursuit of sporting excellence.
