Some children do need formal instruction in phonological awareness because they develop these skills on their own. But others need to be taught to listen for sounds in words and how to move the sounds around. All children benefit from instruction in phonological awareness. Fortunately, we can target these skills with simple fun activities.
Try these activities in your mother tongue and you will still be building your child’s phonological awareness skills! That’s because phonological awareness is necessary to learning to read in all languages.
1. Sing rhymes. It’s good to use actions but don’t forget to emphasise how words rhyme.
2. Make up silly alliterations. Mala Monkey Made Mango Milkshakes…
3. Put simple words together to compound words: Butter + fly = Butterfly
4. Clap the syllables in your child’s name. Clap the syllables in your family members’ names.
5. When you are at the grocery store, identify the fruits and vegetables beginning with the same sound.
