“We are seizing the night.”
Tens of thousands of women have marched through the streets in India after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a hospital.
The 31-year-old was attacked on Friday at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata last Friday – a hospital volunteer worker has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The Reclaim the Night march in West Bengal state was the culmination of nearly a week protests ignited by the killing. Smaller protests have also taken place in many other Indian cities.
“This is unprecedented. I hope it wakes up the authorities,” said Chaitali Sen, a protester.
Though protests were largely peaceful, police clashed with a small group of unidentified men who barged into the hospital, the site of the doctor’s murder, and ransacked the emergency department.
